It feels like home…
We’ve moved into our new apartment.
I think we’re in the right place.
It’s a two bedroom job in Olde Towne East, a neighborhood on the Near East Side of Columbus. We’ve signed the lease with a friend of ours.
It feels great to be in the neighborhood. It’s definitely a low-income area with a lot of potential.
I took Lucy for her first walk Wednesday evening.
I passed a group of kids, 6 black kids of 13 or 14, and, as is my custom, smiled as I walked past.
After I had passed them, one of them called after me.
“Hey Nigger.”
He repeated the call louder and louder.
“Hey Nigger. Hey Nigger!”
I must misunderstand the meaning of the term, because he was yelling at me. I kept walking.
“Hey Nigger. You suck a dick?”
I didn’t have any zingers to send back and wasn’t in the mood to get jumped that day, so I kept walking.
“Hey Nigger. You suck a double dick? You suck that dogs dick, Nigger?”
I’ve never seen a double dick, but, in fairness, I was walking a twelve pound dog.
“Nigger! Look at me! You suck a dick, Nigger?!”
It feels like home.

I am a fan of documentary films. If you are too, be sure to catch the film “Flag Wars”:

It’s about the gentrification of Olde Towne East.
Well?.....do you?
