Miracles and Sin
I find it interesting that in Jesus’ day the public, as well as the religious big shots, were willing to believe in Jesus’ miracles, but when it came to the forgiveness of sins they were like “whoah, hey there buddy. Do all the miracles you want, but this Son of God talk is over the line.”
Today, it’s the exact opposite.
Most Americans understand the concept that Jesus hypothetically alleviates the consequences of our sin.
Whether we subscribe to that line of thinking or not, we get the point. Okay, Jesus came to Earth via a virgin, was the Son of God, lived a sinless life, died and now if we ask our sins are gone and we get a heaven pass.
But when it comes to miracles and supernatural events we say “whoah, I get the whole forgiveness of sins thing, but what is all of this hocus pocus mumbo jumbo—demons, miracles, speaking in tongues and supernatural healing? Stick to the sins thing, this stuff makes you sound crazy.”
It’s funny how things change. I guess we’re doomed to be skeptical of one or the other.

I’m reading an interesting book about the origins of Christianity, and it talks about this very thing. From what I’ve read so far, much of it can be attributed to a general acceptance of mysticism and sorcery at the time. I’ll pass on the book when done…
