No More Rules

The rules were weighing us down, and dampening our spirit and our genuine expression of our desire to serve God and love others.

Rules in general are counter-philosophical and in some instances, the rules themselves clashed with our principles.

I think this is why Jesus spoke in parables.  Parables provide general guidelines that can be interpreted and applied to any situation.

If Jesus had attempted to simply give us a list of rules, the bible would be infinitely long, and someone would always find a loophole.

The parables transcend time and space.

For instance, Jesus didn’t give any instruction regarding illegal drugs.

Instead, he told us to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and body, a general principle that we can apply to any situation or lifestyle choice.

If I make this choice, will I still be loving God in every way that I can?

Remember that Melissa and I are allowed to change our minds and modify things later, but right now I think our principles are these:

Love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength
Love our neighbors (Everyone) as ourselves
Live life to the fullest
Be less so that others are more

Previously, all of our rules were money focused.  We’ve got a lot of thinking to do when it comes to money, but the most important thing is to remove money from its dominant position in our lives.

The best way to do that is to simply not care.

In the same way that we try and spend less, we can’t be so focused on money that frugality becomes our purpose.  This can be as much of a distraction as idealizing the accumulation of wealth.

I think that these principles are enough to get us started down a path to a simpler life.
