Seattle Is A Friendly Place

Seattle is a friendly city.  It has no superficial friendly charm… there aren’t a lot of cheerful smiles walking down the sidewalk, but people are generally interested in each other.

Newport, Tennessee was also a friendly place.  Melissa and I walked down the small town streets there and everyone we passed waved hello and smiled.  We didn’t find this in Seattle.

Being from the midwest (and friendly families at that) we tend to say hello to people we pass on the street out of habit.  In Seattle, no one has yet said ‘hello’ back.  This doesn’t stop us from trying, we’ve just begun to appreciate the vast variety of quizical stares and suspicious glances.

But the people that we actually stop to talk to have all been really nice.  When people here bother to talk it seems to be because they’re genuinely interested.  They’re not just trying to fill the awkwardness or perform their friendly duty.

For some reason, maybe it’s the awful weather, Seattleites are aware of the people around them.  They’re not duty-bound and superficially cordial with seemingly warm hellos, but they’re considerate of the fact that there are things greater than ourselves.

The atmosphere is really something different.  The concept of sociability here is something to appreciate.
