Tex Mex
I’ve been eating a lot of Tex Mex lately.
A lot.
If I had to form a guess, I would say three meals a day. But that’s just a guess.
We’re volunteering at an international boarding school in Kingsville, Texas where we tutor kids at night, mostly in English, and I build them a new website during the day.
In exchange they let us stay here for free, and they feed us.
Most of the kids are from Mexico or Latin America, here to earn an American high school diploma.
A special thanks goes out to Melissa’s cousin Rachel for setting us up with this sweet deal.
When we were in Louisiana I had an irrational fear of Texas, lonestaphobia, I believe it’s called. But now I must admit, it’s really nice.
They say that it gets really hot. It’s about 80 now, so I believe them. They said that this is a cold spell.
I can’t think of anything good to say (or bad) right now, so I’ll spare you a tirade. But, you just wait. I feel a good one welling up inside of me.

Hey guys! It’s good to hear what you guys are ...doing.
...on a side note, I used to live in Kingsville!!! My dad was stationed at the Naval Air Base there when I was 10. We used to go to this small, Southern Baptist church called “Retama Park Baptist Church” (said with a proud southern drawl), where I was baptized, and also traumatized by their staunch legalism. I remember the pastor asked me to play piano for the offering one Sunday, and everyone clapped after I was done. Then the pastor promptly told everyone to please refrain from clapping. I forget his reasoning, but I just remember my 11 yr. old self feeling overwhelmingly guilty for making the whole church sin. Ah, yes. Fun times. ANYway, I don’t know how much Kingsville has grown or changed (it was very small back in ‘92-’94), but if it’s still there, check out this AMAZING Mexican restaurant called “Tequeria Jalisco”. It was my family’s favorite. And ask people if there are still dome houses on Stacy St. There were only four when we lived there, and we used to lived in one of them. ...looking forward to hearing more, -imee
gotta love Kingsville. Seriously that school is one of the best environments i have ever been in. The people are great and yes its freaking hot. Don’t sleep in the main room at the guest house.
Tell all the kids that are first yrs I said hello esp Hector who recently e-mailed me about failing some classes. Help him out. Hes a good kid.
Imee - What a coincidence. I don’t think the town has come far since then.
That story is awful! That atmosphere is definitely persistent at the school too. It seems like there are lots of rules. Oh well… their church I guess.
That restaurant is still there. On your recommendation, we’ll definitely try to get there before we leave.
I’ll see what I can find out about the dome houses.
Rachel—Yes, Hector’s a good guy. Horrible English though, you did a great job
Why would you sleep in the main room at the guest house?
