Zanesville, OH
Melissa doesn’t believe me when I say that I could live in Zanesville someday. To her it’s just the place where she grew up.
To me, it’s quaint, it’s modest… and I like it.
As far as the city goes, the place is built around I-70. It’s no trick to get to Columbus for business or Wheeling for pleasure.
Zanesville has a wonderful downtown area, with plenty of old churches to go around. The place is in serious need of rehab, but in a decade it could once again be an Eastern Ohio commercial, industrial and residential hub.
For the size of the city, the arts are vibrant. I’ve been told that Zanesville is an artist’s colony of sorts. That could be a bit of a stretch, but the number of small studios and original artwork in the downtown area is impressive.
Good points aside, I wouldn’t plan a family vacation to Zanesville, but don’t hesitate to stop in for a night on I-70 headed to God knows where.
As the price of gas continues to rise, re-centralization in the Midwest is a distinct possibility. In such a scenario, Zanesville would regain much of its dominance in the Southeastern portion of the state.
The final, and clearly most important perk of living in Zanesville is that you can lay claim to more than half of Ohio’s regions.
Southeastern Ohio, Eastern Ohio, Central Ohio… in Zanesville, any label is fair game.
