Once one of my close friends told me that if I believed God actually spoke to people then I must be schizophrenic.
It’s a good point, really. It’s a valid question.
Lately we’ve been talking about waiting to hear from God what to do next. Do we actually think that God talks to people?
Don’t lock me up, but the answer is yes.
This is something that we’re learning a lot about with only limited success.
I think that God speaks to people in a number of ways.
A very important one is a verbal voice. It’s something inside of my head that says do, say this, pick that up, this person feels selfish or lonely… that sort of thing.
God also speaks to us through other people. Sometimes it could be through something weird like speaking in tongues through the holy spirit, or a prophesy. Other times it could just be a word of encouragement or rebuke that really cuts to the heart, a coincidentally insightful statement.
I think God also speaks to us through uncontrollable urges. I imagine that it’s similar to what crackheads feel when they’re out of crack. Just like they just gotta’ get some crack, we just feel an overwhelming urge to do whatever the unexplainable thing is.
It’s a kind of hungry urge that feels like if I don’t satisfy it, my whole world will be off-balance.
In the bible, people cast lots to determine God’s will.
It sounds kind of silly. Biblical flipping a coin of sorts, but it’s not unreasonable.
Certainly if not used carefully it could get out of hand, but if we truly ask and rely on God to lead us in such a manner, then why not?
Sometimes if Melissa and I get one of those uncontrollable urges, especially if it’s really sort of random and bizarre, then we’ll cast lots to confirm it. 99% of the time they agree.
I’m sure that there are more way than this, God probably talks to each one of us in different ways.
But I wanted you to know that when we talk about God’s voice we’re not talking about some wishy-washy feeling we have, the alignment of the stars or some idea of good sense.
The question is not “what would God say?”, it’s “what does God say?”
There’s something like a God channel that we can get in tune with and literally hear and feel the presence of God every day.
We’re just trying to learn how to spend more of our time on that channel.
