The Good from Today
This week I’ve shaken off some of the winter and post sickness lethargy I have been feeling. I’ve given myself a lot of excuses over the past few weeks to not do as much, and even if they are valid I am tired of being lazy. It’s been a good week to clean behind the stove, wash the windows, better engage with the kids, and work toward a better daily discipline and routine.
That doesn’t mean it’s been an easy week. There have been troubles and distractions, and while I sometimes want to bemoan the hard things, God prompted me to write about what is good today.
We woke up to a dusting of snow. I’m ready for warmth but still like to see the snow.
Our co-op Valentine’s Day party was canceled this morning and despite the kids initial sadness about it they ended up having a sweet morning of play together. The weeks of sickness we’ve experienced seemed to throw off the friend balance in our house which made it nice to see them enjoying each other again.
Sol created this really cool spinning art maker with his snap circuit set. Everyone wanted to join in.
Brad and I got out for lunch at one of our favorite sandwich/coffee joints.
I used a pizza gift card for the kids lunch which is always a win.
We are getting to the point of winter where I hear the birds chirping a little more loudly outside and it brings me joy. I never realize how quiet winter gets until they begin singing again.
I mixed up some bread dough this morning and pita dough this afternoon. I haven’t made pita bread since Theo was tiny but we are having chicken shawarma for dinner and it just seems right to make it instead of running out for a not as good store version.
I got Hal down for a nap after he skipped one yesterday. Strangely enough, he always sleeps worse at night when he skips a nap so I’m grateful for the quiet time and hopefully better night of sleep that awaits us tonight.
I washed up the tiny baby clothes. It never ceases to amaze me how itty bitty they are and it makes me excited to meet this little guy.
I’ve been trying to potty train Hal for about a month. We gave up when we were all sick but I’m impressed at how well he’s jumped back into it. No accidents yet today!
I typed most of this up in the afternoon, but didn’t get around to posting it until evening. We had a fairly uneventful rest of the day, and I have to say the only person that enjoyed the chicken shawarma tonight was Brad. I didn’t really put my heart into the meal and it was a lot of work to not enjoy it, but I’m glad that the one that requested it did find it to be delicious. After we ate we made a plan that I would whip up some brownies and he would clean the kitchen. I’ll take that deal any day of the week.
We are ending the evening in the basement playing video games and watching TV. It’s been a good day, and I’m grateful for the reminder to find the good in a mundane day instead of looking around to see what could be better. Happiness is an attitude, ya know?
